ABOUT PUBLISHING
So you have written a book you want to have published? Your next step is to find a publisher.
be warned:
In my experience I dropped off knock off copies of the paperbacks that I had printed with a simple cover design to a few publishers in London as well as sent copies to known local publishers!
I really wanted the book to be published in London for possible international distribution!
Unless you are well known internationally and famous, nobody is going to publish your script without you paying for their services!
BUT plenty of publishers will take on you script where you are locked into a period contract, you pay all their expenses and sign your rights over to them. Extra expenses I chose not to afford where: Formatting e book and cover design – which you then have to supply the material for the cover – where I failed as my submission did not promote selling the book! Leave that to the professionals!
The publisher will make a profit from you whether your book sells or not!
Once you are committed many add on expenses come afterwards with promises of rosy book sales. And if your book takes off- the publisher most likely will only share a low percentage of your due royalties, and only after a stipulated amount of books are sold!
I was the approached from one of the London publishers that I dropped my book off with, who said that they would like to publish my book as.
I was elated!
Sure I had to pay for proofreading and editing which the script really needed. Other expenses where preparation of eBook, my own book website, google campaign, putting onto the USA market etc. Then you have to prepare the book in the exact font, format, page size and numbering that they require. Sure – if you are not a language expert you will have to pay someone for editing anyhow! If you not a computer boffin or creative you are required to pay for all the extra services. These where all expenses any new publisher will have to face.
It also transpired that nobody at this publisher even read the book! They will extract as much of your funds as possible, anyhow as they make a profit even if your book does not sell!
But the contract I signed stipulated my book rights where locked into them for three years and would only start receiving minimal royalties after 500 books were sold.
I also paid to have book promoted at two international exhibitions, but alas Covid arrived and the exhibitions became virtual exhibitions with no impact at all. The publisher drastically overpriced the book and wanted 200GBP for every Pound reduction. This I put my foot down – as being a pensioner was not affordable to me. To crown it all if I purchased printed copy of my book and was only given 20% discount at the overpriced book price!
Very few books sold!
I decided to wait three years for the contract to be terminated and look to another means of getting my book out there!
A friend of mine had a book published through Myebook and recommended them. I phoned Dave Henderson at MYeBook, six months before my first publisher’s contact expired and had a chat. After already paying a small fortune to the first publisher Dave sent me a quote which I thought was over my budget. After looking at other means of publishing my book internationally I decide to go with MyeBook!
MYeBook blew my socks clean off!
For the price I have had the book much improved, epilogue and other features added. As well as the cover designed from their art guru Gregg Davies which further blew my socks into the galaxy,
Dave helped all the way through every step of the self-publishing route, published my book on Amazon Kindle and paperback who in turn have put it on many international platforms!
WOW WHAT AFFORDABLE VALUE! – and 100% of the royalties remain yours whilst you remain in control of your publication!
